What is Roshni?

Roshni is a refuge, a safe house for women and their children escaping domestic violence. We provide emergency temporary accommodation for single women and women with children who are fleeing from domestic or sexual abuse/violence. The refuge location is kept confidential and no visitors are allowed in the building. Support workers are present to provide emotional and practical support to women and children.

In practical terms refuge workers can assist & signpost in many ways:
  • Immigration
  • Resettlement
  • Welfare benefits
  • Accessing health services
  • Finding nurseries and schools
  • Gaining legal advice, including accompanying women to appointments and court
  • Safety planning
  • Education and employment

We work with a diverse range of statutory, voluntary and private sectors i.e. schools, police, local authorities, other refuges etc to deliver this.

How long do women stay?

Roshni provides temporary emergency accommodation for women and children that meet our eligibility criteria and adhere to the licensee agreement.  They can stay in the refuge for as long as they need but typically we have a 6 month tenancy and we try to help these women find more suitable permanent accommodation.
